Florida Fishing Spots

Venice Florida used to be famous for it's "Snook Alley." Several years of waterfront construction, loss of habitat and red tide have pretty much wiped all the snook out of Snook Alley in Venice. The fishing is coming back, but it will be very slowly and never return to it's recent splendor because the habitat just isn't there any more. Fishing in Venice is slowly getting back to the point where we would have a vibrant stock of snook. These days it is rare to catch a keeper size snook, but they are getting bigger on average it seems. If we don't, we made have to just be happy that we are in Florida and connected to the Intercoastal waterway, which means some fish will move through our town occasionally on their way somewhere else. That's not we want now is it? Venice Florida Fishing Report - 03-13-2010 The sheepshead fishing is doing great, look under any dock. use light line and small hooks as sheepshead, even the big ones, don't have big mouths. For goodness sake, if your not going to use a tool to de hook, be careful. those teeth in a sheepshead's mouth are made to crush open shells over and over again all day longer, they will put a hurting on your finger! Not many of the deep water boats have been leaving from the area due to inclement weather out on the gulf this past week. Since the snook are getting scarcer and scarcer in the Venice area and Venice has no living grass flats left, the Venice area is stuck with sheepshead and baby snapper. Remember the baby snapper are illegal to catch so please, all of you that are bringing home a bucket full of little palm sized baby snappers, please stop. The drama contnues on sharky's pier. If a few people would stop making such a nasty mess with fish guts all over the deck boards we wouldn't have to worry about them closing the pier partially or totally. There are fish cleaning stations all over the pier, just use them. also if you use a cast net to catch bat, put the bait in a bucket, not on the deck to die and rot. Really. |
