Venice Florida used to be famous for it's "Snook Alley." Several years of waterfront construction, loss of habitat and red tide have pretty much wiped all the snook out of Snook Alley in Venice. The fishing is coming back, but it will be very slowly and never return to it's recent splendor because the habitat just isn't there any more. Fishing in Venice is slowly getting back to the point where we would have a vibrant stock of snook. These days it is rare to catch a keeper size snook, but they are getting bigger on average it seems. If we don't, we made have to just be happy that we are in Florida and connected to the Intercoastal waterway, which means some fish will move through our town occasionally on their way somewhere else. That's not we want now is it? Venice Florida Fishing Report - 11-27-2009 It's all about the snook this time of year in Venice. The Gulf is usually too rough for most sane people to go out in. If you do find your self with a nice calm day or too, the grouper will be shallower than where they are in the summer, so look up some of the man made reefs in Sarasota county and go from there. The snook will be around the bridges and what few lit docks are left in the Venice section of snook alley. It seems there are quite a bit of "Player haters" in the Venice area these days that don't like people that do such "lo brow" things as fishing. But anyway, if you can find a dock that's lit after dark and has some current, throw a bait a little up current and let it float down to the snook. If you're going to fish the bridges, well, you're probably going to have to wait in line. Remember in Venice, even during legal season on snook, it's frowned upon to actually keep an snook. they have less and less habitat and thus there is less and less of them in the Venice area. Please don't kill them, they need a couple more years to breed. If you want fish to eat in the Venice area without getting a ticket (there are no keeper size snook left in the area it seems), go to the grocery. |
